Dear Companions

Our very best wishes to you all for a happy and fulfilling year ahead. More than ever before it seems that anything could happen……so, let us each do what we can by 'holding steady in the light.' (And by participating in the 'Tor' meditation!)

On a positive note, we recall Dion Fortune's comment that her studies of the esoteric aspects of the great religions of the East inspired her to seek a similar esoteric aspect to the religion of the West. In order to make her discoveries available to all, she founded the 'Guild of the Master Jesus’ which, unlike the private work of her magical Fraternity, was open to the public. She wrote a series of lessons, meditations and rituals that provided a comprehensive training course for anyone who wished to take a more active role in the esoteric work of the Guild.

For many years these teaching papers have not been available to the public, so the Companions of Dion Fortune are very pleased to be able to present them through this website. We think you will find them thought-provoking and inspiring. The first of them has been posted in the 'Resources' section of the website, and it will be followed by the remainder in due course.

In love and light,

Peter Nascien

Thank you very much Peter, and all at the Companions of Dion Fortune website, for bringing us, yet again, such interesting and useful documents. The papers from the 'Guild of the Master Jesus' seem so appropriate given your comment that DF intended the work to be for the public.
If only others could be persuaded to share documents that they so cherish in private.
Thank you again - and you can be sure I will be joining in the Tor Meditation.

Greetings, Companions

Yesterday I celebrated Imbolc by going for a walk in the woods - an essential part of my ritual for all the seasonal festivals! The Northeast wind was biting cold and it was almost painful to breathe it down into my lungs. Yet the birds were singing, the first aconites were showing their yellow above the leaves and the hazel catkins were in full bloom. How do they know that Spring is on its way? It can't be the rising temperature - it's colder now than it has been all winter. They must simply be responding to the increasing light. That's a thought worth contemplating.

In spite of the bitter cold, there was a sure and certain difference in the 'feel' of things. I am put in mind of the words of Donovan's 'Lullaby of Spring:'

"In a misty, tangled sky,
Fast a wind is blowing,
In a newborn rabbit's heart
River life is flowing"

Spring sunlight to you all,

Dear Companions

We are happy to have now posted the second excerpt of the Guild of the Master Jesus Teaching Papers. This new section consists of 'The Ceremony of Admission into the Guild' and thus constitutes its central, and most powerful ritual of initiation.

Dion Fortune emphasises throughout these Papers the connection between the Guild and the Holy Grail which was brought by Joseph of Arimathea to Glastonbury. The ritual contains this phrase: "They it is that are called the Mystical Church of the Holy Graal, to whose fellowship you have been admitted by the rite of this ceremony, and for you henceforth, the Cup of the Sacrament is the very Graal....."

Whether or not the Guild of the Master Jesus represents your spiritual path, may we encourage you to read these papers? They contain some of Dion Fortune's most beautiful and evocative writing, and she was clearly writing from her heart.

Dear Companions

We are very pleased to have posted two more installments of the papers written by Dion Fortune as part of the Guild of the Master Jesus. They are the ‘Meditation Instructions’ and ‘Communications Received’ and you can find them by clicking on the ‘Master Jesus’ menu on the Home page.

As with the previous extracts, we believe that you will find these papers of interest whether or not you are specifically drawn to the work of the Guild. The meditation instructions, for example, give some useful teaching on the powerful occult technique known as ‘The Composition of Place’ which can be applied to any magical work.

The paper entitled ‘Communications Received’ is a transcript of two communications received by Dion Fortune from an inner plane guide during 1936. They contain some fascinating insights into the nature of the so-called 'Lesser' and 'Greater' Mysteries and of the type of work each entails. They also set out the essential difference between the work of the Church and the work of the Guild:

“The Cross is an important symbol and one cannot experience the higher aspect of the Ascension without it, but one can have too much of it, my children. The focus and nucleus of your work should be the Graal – the adoration of the Third Person, not the Second.”

Best wishes to all
Peter

Hello everyone, I'm not entirely sure if this is a 'response' or a new post? I thought I'd locked myself out of here but Google just allowed me in, must have saved the password... I can't work out how to respond to the lovely replies to my initial message - I am sorry - but thank you for taking the time to write them.

Well, since I was last here, life has been very full! I left my job, finished fixing up my old Welsh cottage, managed to sell it and moved to Glastonbury. It's not been easy, but now I'm here I have to say it was worth all the aches, tears and stress. A long-time dream is being realised, and that is a few of us are starting a little DF reading group.. nothing new I know, it's all been done before, although we might be taking a more pragmatic rather than academic approach by taking it out to the land and there's talk of artistic creations and all sorts... seems this is inspiring people and could develop into something rather interesting.

So, if anybody is in Glastonbury on April 19th we'll be in the small bar of Becketts at the top of the High St, 7pm. Book: The Demon Lover. Oh, and there's a Facebook group - Avalon Reading Circle... it's nothing fancy or formal but seems to be attracting the right mind hive ... :-)

Dear Katie

Wonderful news! A dream come true, and congratulations for making it happen.

Your DF reading group sounds a marvellous idea, and where better than Glastonbury. I think this ‘hands on’ approach would be just what DF would have suggested herself! Inspiration starts to flow when there is a coming together of different ideas and different approaches, and the very best of luck to you from all of us.

I have included a mention of your first meeting in the ‘Events and Publications’ thread of the Forum.

All good wishes,
Peter

Hello Companions
Having spent a week doing yoga whilst on a retreat (for the first time) I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with.

I seem to recall that Dion Fortune had reservations about practitioners of the Western Mystery Tradition practising yoga. But I cannot recall what her reservations were or even what book they were in. Can anyone help me?

thank you.

Hello Psyche

I think DF mentioned the reservations you speak of in a number of places but the first that came to hand is in DF and Gareth Knight's 'An Introduction to Ritual Magic'. At page 14 of the 2006 Second edition (Thoth) she speaks of psychic training including avoiding 'flesh foods' along with breathing exercises and vibrating sounds as techniques from the east. I suppose the breathing and vibrating might relate to yoga (albeit our western methods include things that could be described in that way). She warns of risks but appears to suggest that when done under the guidance of a 'guru' used to handling european pupils it may not risk 'disastrous' outcomes but says that, even with an experienced guru, 'it is not without risks'. The risks are not specifically detailed in the pages I have in front of me at the moment.
Chapter 17 of 'Sane Occultism' is entitled 'Eastern Methods and Western Bodies'. It talks about differences in conditions between east and west and differences in the likes of endocrine balances which DF suggests influence the nature of appropriate occult systems. It seems the westerner is earthier and more materialistic (and having just porked out on a surfeit of goodies I suspect I cannot argue with that).
All that aside, I do hope you enjoyed your experience. Perhaps you could let us know through this forum if it seems to you to have any significant impact, positive and/or negative, so we know whether to try (risk:D ) a similar route.

Hello Margaret

Thank you for the reply. Yes I can be a guinea pig :)

Well, I do eat flesh and am not expecting to chant ;) ( don't like chanting!) so maybe I will be ok.

My teacher is very experienced and does a lot with Western students. I am a Yoga newbie but he told me that the prayer poses are designed to align mind, body and spirit. Each pose was used by a human who, through mastering that pose, activated their inner divinity and became a god. Sounds good, but I wonder if it is right for everyone?

So far I am doing my daily practice first thing in the morning followed by my usual meditation, no ill effects so far, in fact I would say that I am in a calmer and more alert state of mind before my own meditation.

It did make me think that we rather neglect the body in the western mysteries. We do not denigrate it, like some aspects of Christianity, but neither do we have any particular practice for it either....

Kind regards
Psyche.

I agree - we do neglect the body in the western mysteries. So far as I know we just don't have any 'all over' system in the west that can compare with Yoga, and that surely has to be a disadvantage in the greater scheme of things. DF calls the Kabbalah 'the Yoga of the West' and in terms of achieving the 'union' (am I right in thinking this is the correct translation of 'yoga'?) then I can see that practice of the Kabbalah will take you towards the same goal of experiencing union and unity with All that is the ultimate aim of Yoga. Except for the bodywork, of course.

"The Circuit of Force" by Gareth Knight and Dion Fortune (Thoth Publications) includes several articles by DF that compare the eastern and western approaches to energy work, and some useful commentaries by Gareth Knight. It's interesting how in the west we're adopting a number of eastern spiritual disciples such as Yoga, Tai Chi and so on, and I often wonder what the western mysteries have to offer to the east? Sadly, not a lot springs to mind, but perhaps I'm standing in the wrong place to see this more clearly.

Best regards, Peter

Thank you Peter for your reply.

Ah yes, the Circuit of Force. I am working my way through it. At the moment i'm getting some reassurance from Gareth Knight's statement that Yoga for fitness and relaxation is unlikely to cause harm and as long as one has a teacher who is aware.

I am thinking of Peter's question about what the western mysteries have to offer the eastern. Eek! DF says that there isn't much ceremonial? I am a lover of ceremonial so that matters to me.

What about faery? Do the Eastern Mysteries have a faery tradition does anyone know?

I confess myself very ignorant of the eastern ways of working!

kind regards
Psyche.

Hello Everyone

I'm not sure which thread of the Forum to post this on, so perhaps I'll put it in a couple of places if that's ok!

I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Dion Fortune Seminar day in Glastonbury. There was such a lovely atmosphere and it was great to meet friends old and new. These Seminars have become an important part of the Dion Fortune tradition and I hope there are many more to come.

I gave a talk about 'Dion Fortune and Merlin' which - with many thanks - has now been posted on this website. If you go to the Home Page and click on 'Articles' it appears at the foot of the list.

Love to all, Wendy

Best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy year ahead.

I am very pleased to let you know that Alan Robinson's inspiring essay on the Seven Planes of Consciousness has now been posted on this website. You will find it listed in the 'Articles' menu on the Home page as 'The Seven Planes of Consciousness (part 2)'

The first part of this study forms the final chapter of the book 'Sparks from the Cosmic Flame,' a collection of essays inspired by Dion Fortune's The Cosmic Doctrine, published by Skylight Press. This newly written Part 2 is complete in itself, although you might find it useful to read the initial essay if you haven't already done so.

I believe that Alan's work based on The Cosmic Doctrine is unique in that he is, so far as I know, the only author currently producing material that appears to stem from the same source as the original text, and can be considered as a genuine continuation of this flow of Inner inspiration and guidance. I'm sure you will find much in his latest essay to inform and inspire you for the new year!

Greetings, Companions

We are often contacted by people who are hoping to join a magical group working in the Dion Fortune tradition. Choosing the right magical or spiritual group to train and work with is a big step and it has to be a matter of personal choice, so we cannot give our recommendation to any one group. However, we do offer a list of groups that we know of, which can be accessed by clicking on the 'Resource Articles' section of the main menu.

If you are aware of any other groups that are open to new applicants and you think should be included in this list, do please let us know.

Hello all and thank you for adding me to the group. I am very pleased to have found this website, I think it's exactly what I've been looking for, which is a guide and a companion to the world of Dion Fortune.

I first started reading Dion Fortune's books over twenty years ago but life was busy then and I couldn't focus and that side of life got forgotten about. Then a few months ago, I looked on the book shelf and my attention was drawn to a couple of her books and I picked up The Secrets of Dr Taverner and got stuck in. Since then I've read a few more and intend to gradually work my way through as much as possible. There is so much to learn, I feel quite overwhelmed.

Hello Jen and welcome to the website. How timely that you should have found your way back to the work of Dion Fortune at this time. There does seem to be something of a resurgence in work connected with her acitvities at the moment. If you have not yet had a look at it, do please have a look at the Tor Meditation which is just so appropriate for current times and may be of interest to you.
Welcome again to the site and thank you for your contribution to the forum. We look forward to linking up with you on the forum in future too.

Hi Nova, Hi All

Well I had planned to try the Tor Meditation last evening - Monday 4th Feb and I did actually give it a go but my mood was spoiled by a dreadful morning at work and my rather uncharitable thoughts towards a certain manager there who gave me a few troubles. With that in mind, I wasn't sure whether to postpone it or not but in the end I went ahead with it.

I spent a lot of time reading through the meditation first and looking at pictures of the Tor to help me along. I chose my topic, which was the first one on the list. For a first attempt, I think it went quite well, not quite as I expected it to go though, For instance the path down into the Tor was steeper than it was when I pictured it in my mind before starting, not the gradual slope that I had imagined beforehand and as soon as I saw the cross, the whole thing suddenly grew and blasted out of the Tor, taking the tower with it. It expanded high into the sky and radiated out a light that stretched far into the horizon.

That wasn't what I had expected, I had expected to just keep staring at it for the course of the meditation, so where it came from, I really don't know. I am intrigued to keep practicing though, it was a good experience.

Hello Jen

Thank you for joining in the meditation and for your feedback on this forum. It does not seem unusual for folk who join in to experience the unexpected - perhaps a confirmation that genuine contacts are being made.
There is some feedback too on another thread on this forum 'Glastonbury Tor Meditation' where some other experiences are described.
Light/energy spreading over the land appears to be a positive outcome.
Thank you again for sharing your experience.
