We are sure that many Companions of Dion Fortune are currently experiencing strong emotions regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It has been suggested that Dion Fortune’s ‘Glastonbury Tor’ meditation might be used, or adapted for use, to help alleviate the situation.

We do understand that each individual must find their own way to respond to the crisis as best they can, but at the same time we reiterate DF’s wise insistence that our invocation of the powers of Light, Love and Unity should never be directed to any specific location, or towards achieving a specific purpose. Directing energy into a potentially catastrophic situation can go very wrong, no matter how good the intention to heal.

The role of magical groups and individuals is to align their consciousness with the powers of Light and Love to strengthen their effectiveness, but then to maintain complete ‘spiritual detachment’ so that we do not interpose our personal will or desire. This enables those powers - guided by the great innerworld Beings who have profound knowledge of the path of evolution for our planet - to be used according to Divine purpose.

In the following posts you will find shared thoughts, questions and experiences from those who have undertaken the meditation since we included it on this website.

You can find a full description of the meditation by clicking on the 'Authored Articles' heading above, or from the main menu on the Home page. You will also find, below, various suggested additions to the meditation that have come through as the work has progressed.

Many folk have taken part in this meditation since Dion Fortune first wrote it, She circulated amongst her magical group (known then as the Fraternity of the Inner Light) during the 2nd World War in order to mediate the powers of light and love to the nation. We have introduced it again because we believe that the meditation, its symbolism, and the ideas it puts forward, are equally valid in our present times. We invite you to share in this group work.

Originally the meditation was undertaken by the members of the Fraternity of the Inner Light from 12.15 to 12.30 each Sunday morning. Later, the meditation, together with weekly comments and guidance, was posted out to associates and friends of the Fraternity all over the country, and they joined in the meditation at the same time. Our experience is that there is still a certain power to be felt during this particular time on a Sunday morning but please don't be deterred if this isn't a good time for you! It is absolutely fine to do the meditation whenever you can, and any contribution you make, whether regularly or just occasionally, will have a beneficial effect not only on your own Self but within the Mind and Soul of our land and nation.

With all good wishes,

Peter Nascien

Hello Everyone,

Having read through the Glastonbury Tor Meditation last night, I wonder if someone could clarify whether I am to choose a topic from the list or work through from the start to end. I wasn't clear with the instructions in item 2.

Many thanks :)

I joined in the meditation a little before the start time of 9 pm and even then the Tor felt busy. I would say buzzing but a notable feature was the calmness. I experienced no significant images but rather a feeling of composed energy.
At the end I thought I had been there only a little while but much more time had passed than I had thought.

I made my way to the kissing gate at the appointed hour and found Sandalphon guarding the entrance. He asked me why I was there and I replied 'to be with my brethren'. I was admitted and made my way up the Tor. On reaching the door I found it wide open so I entered. I noticed the that passage was lit by sconces that appeared to be made out of animal skulls. I moved down the passage and around to the right entering the great hall which I found to be full of people. There was a great fire roaring in the hearth and the room had no other lighting except for the fire and the light emanating from the huge golden rose cross that was suspended over the centre of the room. Directly below the cross was a massive granite round table with high backed chairs all around it. I took my allotted place and sat down. All at once, rainbow light poured down from the cross and enveloped the table and all of those seated at it. All of the colours of the rainbow were present and I was within the boundaries of the purple ray. I particularly noticed the presence of four of my friends sitting within the blue ray and one more within the green ray. Several warriors from all ages were seated within the red ray and I was aware of the great significance of their presence at this gathering in order to provide the necessary passion and courage for the work of the immediate future. Suddenly, I heard the sound of a glass being tapped as if to call everyone to order and I noticed a robed figure standing across the table from me. I felt that this was DNF herself and she seemed to be giving a speech of some sort which, unfortunately, I couldn't make out what she was saying. After a while the communion was over and we all stood up. I went over to greet my friends and we embraced except for one who seemed a little aloof but friendly enough. We exchanged words which I found to be quite heartwarming. After a while I felt that it was time to leave although everyone else seemed to be staying for a while longer. I made my way back up to the surface and went outside. The sky was clear and there was no moon so I could clearly see the constellations. I particularly noticed Ursa Major and Orion which shone brightly. Finally I made my way down to the kissing gate which was now deserted and left the Tor with a feeling of optimism and fellowship.

It took me a while to settle into meditation and to quieten my mind. It wasn't until I did this that I sensed the noise from the nation ?. It felt like a sort of a frustration. Or was that my feelings?

I made my way up to the Tor by the white spring at 9pm. It was dark, a stillness was in the air with only the slightest of breeze which moved and rustled the leaves in the trees nearby. A bird flew from a bush and the sound of its wings was heard in the stillness of the night.

As I approached and looked up at the tower of St Michael, it stood with great strength, power and firmness. It was a truly magnificent sight and feeling. As I entered and began to descend below the ground I felt different. Although I have done this meditation before it has been a very long while and the journey underground this time had a different, better feel to it. I felt comfortable. I think now I'm a bit further on in my learning and I'm therefore in a different place with myself, if that makes sense.

As I entered the dome, the roof was not enclosed and when I looked up I could see a dark indigo sky, cloudless and full of the whitest stars. As I gazed upon the cross, it reminded me of the four corners of Britain. More specifically, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. I could then see the circle of Stonehenge and considered that this circle represented the Round Table and perhaps thought that as a Nation we should be working together in this pandemic rather than individually. The figures were cloaked, they were translucent, but very much present. I could see the roundness and softness of their shoulders and outline of their bodies beneath the cloaks. They gave me the feeling and impression of their femininity.

I looked up again at the sky above and saw a shooting star, falling across the sky. It came to mind that I should make a wish. Something I was told to do from being very little when seeing a shooting star.

So I did, I knew exactly what is would be. Could this wish also be seen as an intention? I left by retracing my steps back to the road by the white spring.

I experienced the interior of the Tor as unusually busy! I think this was testimony to the number of people who took part in this linked meditation, which is marvellous. I hope that many folk will continue to work with this meditation because it has such potential to bring benefit to individuals and to the Group Soul.

My focus was on the nature of silence, and on the way in which ‘silence’ in the sense of the removal of noise and activity from one plane paradoxically appears to increase the vibrancy of the next plane. I wondered whether ‘silence’ is not an external, objectively perceived phenomenon but is a description of one’s own state of consciousness, so that the aim is to achieve an internal silence. If, despite the noise and activity of the physical world, you can achieve an internal serenity then in effect you have created ‘silence’ within yourself because you are no longer buffeted by external stimuli. You become better aware of the inner worlds. So perhaps it is a case of ‘the power of serenity to produce silence’ rather than the other way round.

I also became aware of the ‘magnetic’ or ‘attractive’ power of silence. The more deeply I focussed on the quality of silence, the more deeply I felt drawn into it. Rather than being a negative quality or just ‘absence of noise,’ it became something very positive, beneficial, full of vibrancy and meaning. The silence drew me further into the earth and simultaneously into the spiritual worlds. The phrase ‘silence is golden’ came into my head and it seemed literally true -silence is a quality of light.

Following the meditation, that night I dreamt that I was in Glastonbury High Street and surrounded by hundreds of people who had all discovered that their phones had stopped working, which meant that internet browsing and social media had become impossible. I thought that was a rather good demonstration of a silence we could all use a bit more of!

I have recently been adding to the basic For meditation with the addition of the library, grail chapel and Watchtower above. There are very clear instructions on how to do this in "The Magical Battle". The whole thing is an excellent magical tool to work in. Initiation in the cavern , hermetic Ray information in the library, devotional ray experiences in the Chapel , and occult defense of Logged in the Tower. Red Ray? The Whole is a complete stage for occult development from inner plane contacts with the masters of the rays to contact with Christ in the Chapel. Reminds me of Mr. Knights system in Experience of the Inner Worlds.

Thank you, Thomas, for posting such a valuable addition to the Tor meditation. You are quite right, the combination of the cavern, the library, the Chapel and the summit of the Tower offer a complete system for occult development that could hardly be bettered - and all grounded within the ‘Holiest Erthe’ of Glastonbury! As I recall, Gareth Knight develops this sequence in his book The Abbey Papers which is based on Tewkesbury Abbey rather than Glastonbury, but the same principles still apply.

Thinking about the summit of the tower, as I understand the ‘Tower’ meditation in GK’s Experience of the Inner Worlds, the summit of the Tower is eventually achieved only after making one’s way up through the ‘Dark Cloud’ that represents Daath and the Abyss, so I personally would perhaps tend to think of it more in terms of the radiance of Kether rather than as a Red Ray/Geburic experience?

Perhaps it could be said that achieving knowledge and experience of Kether is ultimately the best ‘occult defence!’

Thank you for your comments Wendy. I was just throwing out a guess on the Tower as on the red ray thinking that the Tor tower concept is something different from the Inner Worlds mystical ascent Tower. Was I thinking more of the Watchtowers of protection as in Fludds diagram of the Citadel of Health? I've used that along with a ritual of The Hieroglyphic Monad as a kind of opening temple ritual. At any rate the Tower is definitely a seminal symbol archetype in our Western Tradition.

I take your point about the Tower! It certainly is a widely used symbol in the Western Tradition (and possibly in other traditions too? I don’t have sufficient knowledge on that score.) In fact we can build an Innerworld Tower to any specifications according to our need and intention. It might be a mystical Tower and an ascent to God, or equally it could be a Tower of protection, or a Faery Tower, or a Tower of the Angelic hierarchies and so on. The only thing they have in common is that they represent an ascent which takes place simultaneously in our own consciousness and on the Inner levels.

I realise, though, that I do have a mental question mark around the whole concept of ‘occult protection.’ It sounds like a good idea but for me it raises the question of who or what, specifically, we are protecting ourselves against. To draw a very broad and generalised parallel, those who are welcomed as ‘freedom fighters’ by some folk are repelled as ‘terrorists’ by others. I think the same dilemma applies to the Inner planes although perhaps is more subtle. The Gods of one tradition/religion are not necessarily accepted as beneficent forces by other traditions/religions.

And for me, part of the same question is how can it be possible to throw out a ray or sigil, or cast a circle etc which automatically repels all the Inner forces you don’t want hanging around but permits entry to all those that you want to invite in?! Is it possible? I’m not sure that it is.

Old Golden Dawn methods of working I guess were closer to the Solomomic Grimoire way of working . Bill Gray said when something appears that is "not right" note that it does have a place somewhere. Simply allow it to go to its rightful place. And personally after many years of practice in these matters I've never been attacked or experienced any pathology of the occult so I agree that all that occult protection material probably could use a rethink. Giving the sign of the cross before meditating seems enough for me at any rate.

In her Glastonbury Tor meditation, and elsewhere throughout her writings, Dion Fortune highlighted the significance of Glastonbury as a sacred centre for the islands of Britain, not least the part it plays in the legend of how the Grail was brought from Jerusalem to Glastonbury by Joseph of Arimathea. There are some aspects of the early history of the Grail which DF would not have known simply because the relevant texts were not available to her, but which provide some interesting information concerning the connection between the Grail, Glastonbury and Jerusalem.
We have posted an essay entitled 'The Grail from Jerusalem to Glastonbury' which explores some of the interesting parallels that can be made between the Grail's first 'Adventure' as it left Jerusalem, and its destination in Glastonbury.
The essay can be accessed from the Main Menu: click on 'Articles.'

Should this meditation only be done one a week, or can it be done more frequently?

Having visited the Tor before I thought the visualization would be straightforward, but it was more difficult than I expected. Is it because I am not currently in the UK, or is that irrelevant? When attempting to visualize the cross I had something in mind like the Orthodox cross with a rose in the centre, but something else appeared in its place very strongly and unexpectedly, with an intense white light. After doing some research I discovered it was the 'winged self'. I wasn't expecting this at all and was taken aback. I had seen the image online a couple of years ago, but I'd never thought about since.

Thank you for your interesting queries and your comments on your experience with the meditation. As with all such things, there is no fixed correct answer to your queries and perhaps others will also like to comment here. There is no fixed frequency which is right for everyone. Whilst this meditation has been used by Dion Fortune's group, and others, as a weekly meditation where members joined in remotely, that does not mean that everyone would find it best to work to that frequency. If you feel comfortable or feel drawn to greater or lesser frequency then it may be best to follow that feeling.

As to the difficulty experienced with the meditation, it is possible, perhaps probable, that location could have some influence. Some have reported in general that different experiences and differences in ease of making specific contacts might be found at different geographic locations. So far as I am aware this is not something that is throroughly understood and any comments and views from others might be enlightening here. You do not mention if you permanently live elsewhere or whether you are UK based but currently elsewhere. I suspect, but do not know, that such factors may well have an influence. Some may see this as a matter of moving from individual consciousness, through national consciousness, to what might be termed general consciousness, and then to something somewhat higher. Yet this is far from a satisfactory explanation but is perhaps the best we can manage seeing and imagining things largely from a 3D perspective.

Thank you for sharing your specific experience with this meditation. You appear to be taking the recommendable approach here of finding out a little more when the unexpected appears. Keeping a notebook of meditations can be very useful as the memory of them can fade so quickly and the significance of experiences can be lost.

Thank you for joining us on the site and for sharing your meditation experience.

It is my experience that meditative and spiritual exercises become more difficult in direct proportion to the distance I am from home, and I am often surprised when I realise this is happening! Yet as we know, regular meditation combined with the use of repeated visualisation and deliberate building of inner-plane forms and scenes creates patterns or ‘webs’ on the etheric which, over time, become substantial. But I also find that the experience of being surprised by a sudden vision or message which appears unsought in meditation can be a useful indication that it is a genuine impulse from the Inner planes. Interpretation of such visions is largely a personal matter but the image of wings often seems to suggest the presence of an elevated, transformative, spiritual energy. Once an image such as this has been perceived and reported, this initiates the process by which others can become inspired by it and perhaps include it in their own meditations. Thank you very much for sharing your vision.

Like Wendy, it is my experience that my location when performing a regular meditation can affect the results, especially by injecting elements of the local atmosphere into the mix. I well remember that, when I was undergoing my group training, I performed a regular meditation whilst away on business in Ireland. The result was that a great deal of harsh, raw elemental energy inserted itself into what was normally a calm and quiet scenario - to the extent that it made me feel so uncomfortable, not being used to that kind of raw green ray energy at the time, that it almost caused me to delay the assignment for a few days until I got home.

Thank you jfc for your observations on the powerful green ray energy that can be experienced in Ireland! It is many years since I went to Ireland and you have reminded me how much I would like to travel there again.

In the context of the Glastonbury Tor meditation I think you also raise a useful general point concerning how each of us, each in our individual location, can link and integrate the earth-energies of our environment into the Inner focus of the Tor and the cavern beneath the Tor. This might be done in meditation for example simply by attuning to our local landscape, perhaps by visualising an image that represented it, and then connecting this with a line of light to the Tor.

I would be very interested to hear of any DF Companions in Ireland?
